Problems with Veteran's Hospitals...
President Bush ordered a comprehensive review Friday of conditions at the nation's military and veteran hospitals in the wake of a scandal surrounding care for wounded troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
Evaluate the system of care that is currently in place. Based on what we have studied surrounding war, do you believe veterans are deserving of a certain level of care? Why? Argue what might be a better system to be put into place.

I agree with Nina; after what these soldiers have been through they don't deserve to go to a run-down hospital where they are poorly treated. Instead they deserve the best so that they can heal both physically and mentally from the tolls that war has taken on them. I think it's amazing that the hospitals even got this bad in the first place. What could the officials have been doing that they missed this major detail? I read somewhere else that there were several hospitals with similar conditions to Walter Reed, which is sad. These soldiers deserve the best care available.
As Heather said, when soldiers get back from war, they deserve only the best care a treatment. For a well-known hospital such as Walter Reed to be such a dump is a shame and should be an embarassment to our government and the people in charge of the hospital. These types of conditions should not be tolerated for soldiers returning home from war.
I think that veterans are getting adequate care for the most part, with health benefits and special payments. This special level of care is very necessary ebcause the soldiers made a huge sacrifice when defending our country and we need to pay them back for that. After reading this article, however, it is clear that there are mistakes that the government is making with the state of veteran and military hospitals, and i think they should be checked more regularly.
I think that this is very good of President Bush to improve the Veteran Hospitals because if these soldiers served in war for uss, we should at least take care of the wounds that they suffered. When President Bush fired the head of the hospital, i think if that was neccesary to improve the hospital, then that should have been done. If these people risked their lives for us in war, we should st least take care of them, if not more.
As many other people have said, the soldiers have worked hard for this country, a "luxurious" hospital, as Nina said, is well deserved for the military and veteran hospitals. They have wounds which must be healed, as they have mended our country. Consequently, they should have the best hospitals. I also agree with Brian, while this should not be the most significant factor in establishing better quality hospitals for our veterans and milirary,it is an embarassment for our country that these hospitals are so poor. These soldiers deserve the best care which can be provided.
We should take care of them because they fought so we can even exist in a free nation. Give them what they need, and then some.
After these people go off, put their lives in danger, put their bodies through enormous amounts of stress and deal with things people shouldn't have to go through, it is only right that they get the highest levels of care when they return home from duty. If it were not for these people, we wouldn't still have this country. I think it is entirelly unacceptable that after all these people have done for us that, when they finally get back to safety and are looking forward to relaxing, we dump them in some crummy, 3rd rate hospital. They've done so much for them and we can't even thank them with decent accomodations. Military hospitals should be high quality and top priority during war times.
Obviously, veterans deserve all of the care they are given and more. They should have the best medical care and hospitals our country can offer because of the sacrifice they give for all of America's citizens. Yet, I can't help but wonder why Pres. Bush is jumping on this problem so quickly when it took forever to get relief to New Orleans after Katrina. I can't help but think that the last elections, with the Democrats beating out the Republicans, has opened the President's eyes to the fact that we want our troops home. I think his getting the hospitals completely up to par is his way of trying to get some of his supporters back...
People that put their lives in danger, probobly expect that they will have better-than-average medical treatment if something happens to them. So, now that Walter Reed, and Army medical Center, has proven that they are not taking care of their troops, will this deter people from joining the army? One would think not, but all the same, there will be people who believe that risking their life for their country is not enough of a reason to join, especially if the medical aid is not up to par.
Overall, its really too bad that Walter Reed let the conditions of their hospital drop like this. Now that Bush has fired the head of the hospital, he should make sure to follow up and find someone who will do a much better job of keeping the hospital clan and run well.
I think that it is an atrocity that troops who have served our country in battle aren't getting proper medical attention. I'm not exactly sure about what system should be put in place, but as long as our troops are being properly cared for, I don't really care.
I think this is a very bad thing, i thought these men coming back would get really good treatment. I agree with everyone that this should not be tolerated, and these mistakes should be changed. I also believe that these conditions do not reflect the amry hospitals as a whole.
The LEAST that these soldiers deserve is a luxurious hospital. The only reason that these men and women are in these facilities is because they were out fighting for our country! In that case it would only be fair that we accommodated them and made these conditions superb. What makes me wonder is to think of how these hospitals became so bad and run down in the first place? The wounds that these men and women get are remembered for the rest of their lives and to think that they could have been infected or mistreated is disgusting. These hospitals represents our countries respect for their soldiers and Walter Reed was a horrible example and a lesson should be learned from it.
I agree with everyone in saying that military hospitals need to be well maintained and comfortable for the vetrans. Since they made such a big risk, they deserve good care.
The worst air quality you can find will be in a hospital. But this doeasn't mean the hospital itself has to be a dump.
I feel that the article purposeless with-held information about what was really happening at Walter Reed. I think that veterans recieve a high level of care due to the sacrifices they have made for the nation. People undoubtably will react to this because in general the nation holds the idea of an American soldier in such high regard. A better system would be more carefully watched by multiple positions rather than just one man in one position
I remember talking about this issue in class and I just find it ridiculous that we weren’t treating these guys with the respect and care they needed. They would have died for us so we should be doing all we can to help them. Personally I send packages to soldiers monthly and I think that when they come home they deserve the best care we have. These people have earned our care and when we don’t give it to them we show the world that we don’t care about the people in our country. It’s a disgrace to the government and even just the people. Something needs to be done to make sure car for soldiers is a top priority for our country.
There's no question in my mind that Veterans deserve the highest level of care available. They risked their lives to fight for our freedom and they deserve not only the utmost respect but also aid in any form necessary.
It's nice to see that people are trying to fix the situation in our hospitals but it is also sad it had to go this far. I think that routine checks of all public hospitals should be enforced and the results of those checks should be studied intently. If we could implement the same type of health inspection program used for restaurants into the world of medical treatment, we would be taking a major step forward.
When military men and women come back from battle, they ought to have the best treatment and care. For a distinguished hospital like Walter Reed to be in bad shape is a disgrace and is a shame to our government and the men and women in command of the hospital. These conditions must not be endured because the soldiers returning home from battle deserve better.
